Did you know that snakes don't use their teeth to chew? Or that Iceland, Ireland, Greenland, Newfoundland, and Antarctica are all too cold for snakes? Fascinatingly, snakes can eat things that are 75-100% their own size!

Join us at the Little Rock Zoo for a special celebration of World Snake Day and discover more amazing facts about these incredible creatures. This day is dedicated to our slithery friends around the globe, and we have a range of activities to help you learn about their importance in the environment.

Snakes play a critical role in maintaining ecological balance, and we can help to ensure their continued existence and well-being. Snakes, as integral components of ecosystems, help control pest populations, contributing to a balanced and healthy environment. Snakes are ecosystem engineers, creating and modifying habitats as they move through the terrain and disperse seeds eaten by their prey. Their presence is a sign of a thriving and diverse ecosystem.

How can we contribute to snake conservation?

1. Habitat Preservation: The primary threat to snake populations is habitat loss. Support conservation initiatives that focus on preserving and restoring natural habitats, ensuring snakes have the spaces they need to thrive. One of the Zoo’s conservation partners, The Orianne Society, focuses on conserving landscapes where snakes and other reptile and amphibian species live. You can also participate in a local clean-up event, like those sponsored by the Little Rock Zoo, to help keep urban snake habitats healthy.
2. Education and Awareness: Combat myths and fears associated with snakes through education. Attend educational programs, events (like World Snake Day), and exhibits to learn more about snake species and conservation efforts. By visiting the Zoo or the Zoo’s website, you’re already doing this!
3. Responsible Wildlife Encounters: If you encounter a snake in the wild, observe from a safe distance. Remember that most snakes play a vital role in pest control and are not a threat to humans. Respecting their space is crucial for both their safety and ours. In Arkansas, it is illegal to kill a snake unless it poses a direct threat to you.
4. Support Conservation Organizations: Contribute to reputable conservation organizations dedicated to snake conservation. These organizations work on research, habitat protection, and advocacy to secure a future for snakes. By visiting the Zoo, you’re already contributing! A portion of your admission and parking fee is dedicated to conservation groups that the Zoo is partnered with.
5. Responsible Breeding Programs: AZA-accredited zoos are permitted to engage in responsible breeding programs to maintain healthy populations for certain species. One such program is the SSP, or Species Survival Plan, which helps to ensure the survival of select species which are either threatened or endangered in the wild. By supporting these initiatives, zoos contribute to genetic diversity and long-term survival. The Little Rock Zoo participates in the SSP program for many of our animals, including the Aruba Island Rattlesnake.
