The Historic Café Africa

Formerly the Cat House at the Little Rock Zoo, Café Africa stands as a testament to the remarkable craftsmanship of Silas Owens Sr., a skilled African American stonemason, carpenter, and farmer. Hailing from Faulkner County, Owens left an enduring legacy in central Arkansas with his distinctive construction style known as Mixed Masonry.

The Little Rock Zoo's first buildings were made of native Arkansan stone and built by the Works Progress Administration (WPA). In 1936, Owens played a pivotal role in the construction of the Elephant House, Cat House, and the Reptile & Tropical Bird House at the Little Rock Zoo under a WPA contract. These historic buildings housed primates, reptiles, birds, and big cats. Today, these buildings are still in use, and the Cat House has been transformed into Café Africa.

Yes—lions and tigers once lived in the building! Casey, the lion painted above the fireplace, was one of the last lions to live here.

Today, Café Africa not only offers a unique dining experience but also provides visitors with a chance to appreciate the historical and architectural significance of this iconic building. As you enjoy your meal, take a moment to reflect on the legacy of Silas Owens Sr. and his contributions to the zoo and the community.
