Tigers are apex predators, playing a crucial role in maintaining the balance of their ecosystems. By protecting tigers, we safeguard the health and biodiversity of entire landscapes.
By protecting tigers, we safeguard the health and biodiversity of entire landscapes. The Little Rock Zoo is home to three Malayan tiger girls - Kae, Zoya, and Sundari. The girls were born on August 13, 2022, and are genetically valuable members of their species. Malayan tigers are critically endangered with only about 250 remaining in the wild.
How can you contribute to the conservation of tigers?
- Habitat Preservation: The primary threat to tigers is habitat loss. Support conservation initiatives focused on preserving and connecting natural habitats, ensuring these magnificent cats have sufficient space to thrive. When buying timber, look for a label stating it is “FSC certified”, meaning it is certified as sustainably sourced by the Forest Stewardship Council. Choose products that use sustainable practices and encourage businesses to adopt ethical and eco-friendly standards.
- Support Conservation Organizations: Contribute to reputable conservation organizations dedicated to tiger conservation. Your support can fund critical research, community programs, and habitat protection initiatives. By visiting the Zoo, you’re already doing this! A portion of your admission and parking fee is dedicated to conservation groups that we are partnered with, like Malaysian Conservation Alliance for Tigers, (MYCAT). The Zoo also participates in AZA’s Species Survival Plan, or SSP, which helps to ensure the survival of select species which are either threatened or endangered in the wild.
- Responsible Tourism: If you visit areas where tigers are found, practice responsible tourism. Choose operators and activities that prioritize the well-being of tigers and their habitats, minimizing disturbances. Do not purchase products that were not ethically sourced; and don’t be afraid to ask sellers where their products came from.
- Raise Awareness: Use Global Tiger Day to raise awareness about tigers. Share information about the challenges they face, the importance of conserving their habitats, and the role each person can play in tiger conservation.
