World Orangutan Day 2024

Dates: 8/19/2024 - 8/19/2024
Price: Included with Admission

World Orangutan Day is a day devoted to raising awareness about the largest arboreal (tree-dwelling) ambassadors of the rainforests. Orangutans are the gardeners of their habitats, spreading seeds and regenerating forests. By conserving and protecting orangutans, we ensure the preservation of their habitats and the biodiversity within.

Schedule of Activities:

Monday, August 19, 2024

10:00-12:00: Awareness table at Great Apes, rainforest exploration station, and hands-on activities

1:30: Great ape scatter feed and keeper chat

How can we contribute to orangutan conservation?

  1. Habitat Preservation: The primary threat to orangutans is habitat loss due to deforestation. Support conservation initiatives aimed at preserving and restoring their natural habitats. Little Rock Zoo works with AZA’s SAFE (Saving Animals From Extinction) program, Orangutan SAFE, to preserve orangutan habitats.
  2. Sustainable Palm Oil Advocacy: The palm oil industry is a major contributor to deforestation, impacting orangutan habitats. Choose products that use sustainable palm oil and encourage businesses to adopt ethical and eco-friendly practices. You can download apps like PalmOil Scan, developed by Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, to determine whether a product is certified as sustainably sourced.
  3. Anti-Illegal Logging Measures: Combat illegal logging, which poses a severe threat to orangutan habitats. When buying timber or other products, be sure it is labeled “FSC certified”, meaning it is certified as sustainably sourced by the Forest Stewardship Council.
  4. Support Conservation Organizations: Contribute to reputable conservation organizations dedicated to orangutan conservation. Your support can fund research, habitat protection, and community programs essential for the survival of orangutans. By visiting the Zoo, you’re already doing this! A portion of your admission and parking fee is dedicated to conservation groups that we are partnered with, like Bornean Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOSF Project).
  5. Raise Awareness: Use World Orangutan Day to raise awareness about the challenges orangutans face. Share with others about the impact of deforestation and the critical need for conservation efforts.
