Lemurs as pollinators and seed dispersers are essential to their habitats. As they move from flower to flower transferring pollen, they help plants reproduce and spread. Found nowhere else on Earth but in Madagascar, lemurs face imminent threats, and we can help to ensure their survival and the conservation of Madagascar's rich biodiversity. The primary threat to lemurs is habitat loss due to deforestation, illegal logging, and other human activities. Visit the Zoo on Friday, October 25th to learn more about how you can help lemurs and to meet the 3 species of lemurs that live here at the Zoo, our ring-tailed lemurs, blue-eyed black lemurs, and black-and-white ruffed lemurs!
Schedule of Events:
Friday, October 25, 2024
10:00-12:00: Awareness table near lemur exhibit, habitat exploration station, and hands-on activities
Here’s how we can contribute to Lemur conservation:
- Raise Awareness: Use World Lemur Day to raise awareness about the challenges lemurs face. Share information about their benefits, the impact of habitat loss, and the critical need for conservation efforts.
- Support Responsible Breeding Programs: As an AZA member, the Little Rock Zoo is an active participant in a number of Species Survival Plans (SSP), aimed at managing and conserving typically threatened or endangered animal populations. Zoos and aquariums play a leading role in preserving animal populations across the globe. By sharing research and knowledge, participating institutions work together to establish guidelines that best ensure the health of captive populations, and with success, the survival of endangered species.
- Shop Sustainably: Use your purchasing power to support responsible businesses that protect forests, improve the livelihoods of farmers and forest communities, promote human rights, and help humans and wildlife thrive. Look for products that are Rainforest Alliance or Fair Trade Certified to promote businesses who aim to reduce threats to many endangered species, including lemurs.
- Support Conservation Organizations: Contribute to reputable conservation organizations dedicated to lemur conservation. Your support can fund research, habitat protection, and community programs essential for the survival of lemurs. By visiting the Zoo, you’re already doing this! A portion of your admission and parking fee is dedicated to conservation groups that we are partnered with. Check out the Lemur Conservation Foundation for more ways to help.
