Why Gorillas Need Us Now More Than Ever
Found only in the dense forests of equatorial Africa, all species of gorillas are endangered. These majestic animals face numerous threats, including the illegal wildlife trade, habitat destruction, disease, and civil unrest. Many dedicated organizations are working tirelessly to save them, but we need everyone’s help to make a real impact!
Join us at the Zoo on Tuesday, September 24th, to meet our gorilla troop and their dedicated keepers! The day's activities are included with your admission. Remember to bring your old cellphones to recycle in the drop box available at the front Entry & at the Gorilla habitat —your contribution will support gorilla conservation and reduce the demand for mining that endangers these incredible animals.
Schedule of Events:
Tuesday, September 24th, 2024
10:00-12:00: Awareness table at Great Apes, habitat exploration station, and interactive activities
1:30: Keeper chat and scatter feed @ Great Apes exhibits
And don't miss this great opportunity to discover our latest exhibit - DRAGON KINGDOM!
Here’s how we can contribute to gorilla conservation:
1. Recycle old electronics: Gorilla habitats are impacted by mining for materials used in cell phones and other electronics. Recycling these items with ECO-CELL helps save these animals by raising funds for gorilla conservation and reducing the demand for Coltan and other minerals. Recycle your cellphones year-round at the Little Rock Zoo by locating our cell phone recycling box at the gorilla exhibit or at the zoo entrance.
2. Shop Sustainably: Support responsible businesses that protect forests, improve the livelihoods of farmers and forest communities, promote human rights, and help humans and wildlife thrive. Look for products that are Rainforest Alliance or Fair Trade Certified to promote businesses who aim to reduce threats to many endangered species, including gorillas.
3. Raise Awareness: Use World Gorilla Day to raise awareness about the challenges gorillas face. Share information about their ecological benefits and the critical need for conservation efforts. Share with others this list of ways anyone can help.
4. Support Conservation Organizations: Contribute to reputable conservation organizations dedicated to gorilla conservation. Your support can fund research, habitat protection, anti-poaching measures, and community programs essential for the survival of gorillas. Some of the Little Rock Zoo’s partners include Gorilla SAFE and the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund.
