A Tiny Wonder Returns: Meet Our New Dik-Dik at Little Rock Zoo
LITTLE ROCK (September 5, 2024) – We’re excited to announce we have a new dik-dik at the Little Rock Zoo! These small antelopes, native to the savannas and shrublands of eastern and southern Africa, are known for their delicate build, large expressive eyes, and remarkably tiny stature, making them one of the most enchanting animals you'll encounter at the Zoo.
What Makes Dik-Diks So Special?
Dik-diks are named for the distinctive alarm call they make when startled—a "dik-dik" sound that echoes through the African bush. These petite antelopes stand only about 12 to 16 inches tall at the shoulder, making them one of the smallest antelope species in the world. Despite their size, dik-diks are incredibly agile and can dart through dense vegetation with ease, thanks to their slender legs and nimble frame.
One of the most fascinating aspects of dik-diks is their monogamous nature. These antelopes typically form lifelong pairs, which is relatively rare in the animal kingdom. They are also known for their territorial behavior, often marking their small home ranges with dung and glandular secretions. Their diet consists mainly of leaves, fruits, and flowers, which they expertly select to maximize nutrition while avoiding water sources—dik-diks obtain most of their hydration from the food they eat.
Our new resident is a male dik-dik, and though he may be small, his presence is a significant addition to our Zoo's collection. We’re eagerly anticipating the arrival of a female companion for him soon, which will allow us to further showcase the fascinating social dynamics and natural behaviors of these remarkable creatures.
Where to Find the Dik-Dik
We invite you to visit the Little Rock Zoo and meet our new dik-dik in person. You’ll find him in his cozy habitat right next to the red river hogs, just across from the entrance to Penguin Pointe. As you explore the Zoo, don’t miss the opportunity to observe this tiny wonder up close and learn more about the unique adaptations that make dik-diks so special.
Your visit supports our efforts to provide excellent care for all our animals and contributes to our mission of education and conservation. Plan your trip today and come see why the dik-dik is one of the most extraordinary animals at the Little Rock Zoo!
