LITTLE ROCK (August 29, 2024) –The Little Rock Zoo has recently undertaken a significant and commendable initiative aimed at enhancing environmental sustainability and protecting our precious water resources. Through an extensive stormwater management project, the Zoo has made remarkable strides in fortifying its infrastructure against potential pollutants and ensuring the preservation of local ecosystems.

Central to this initiative is the installation of 72 state-of-the-art storm covers strategically placed throughout the Zoo's expansive grounds. These cutting-edge drains, developed by Frog Creek Partners, represent a blend of innovation and environmental consciousness, engineered to mitigate the effects of stormwater runoff on nearby water bodies. Each of these newly deployed storm covers is outfitted with advanced filtration systems, incorporating specially designed barriers to intercept solid waste and prevent its passage into the drainage system.

The significance of this project transcends the confines of the Zoo's premises, as the implications of stormwater management extend far beyond its boundaries. The Zoo's stormwater ultimately flows into Colemans Creek, which in turn feeds into Fourche Creek, eventually reaching the Arkansas River—a vital waterway that contributes to the mighty Mississippi River. Given the interconnected nature of these waterways, the consequences of untreated stormwater runoff can resonate across vast geographical scales, impacting not only local ecosystems but also posing threats to regional and even global water quality.

By implementing these innovative storm drain filters, the Little Rock Zoo is taking proactive measures in safeguarding the health and integrity of our waterways. The inclusion of specialized filtration mechanisms ensures that pollutants such as debris, sediment, and other contaminants are effectively trapped before they have the chance to reach downstream ecosystems. This proactive approach not only mitigates the immediate environmental impact but also contributes to the broader efforts aimed at preserving the ecological balance of our rivers and oceans.

In conclusion, the Little Rock Zoo's dedication to environmental stewardship through its stormwater management project showcases a commitment to protecting local ecosystems and preserving water quality. By implementing cutting-edge technologies and proactive measures, the Zoo sets an inspiring example for conservation efforts, demonstrating the importance of collective action in safeguarding our natural resources for future generations.
