National Appreciate a Dragon Day

Dragons aren’t just myths and legends—they’re real, and they’re right here at the Little Rock Zoo! Celebrate National Appreciate a Dragon Day by learning about these fascinating creatures and their important role in ecosystems.

Dragons, along with other lizards and reptiles, help with seed dispersal, pollination, pest control, and nutrient recycling. Unfortunately, many dragon species are threatened by habitat loss, pollution, hunting, and over-collection in the wild.

On this special day, visit the Zoo to meet our incredible resident dragons in the Reptile House:

  • Iroh, our Komodo Dragon, who is eagerly awaiting his new, larger exhibit (currently under construction and set to open in Spring 2025).
  • Eris and Circe, our two Sailfin Dragons, our newest residents, also in the Reptile House.
  • Steve, our ambassador Bearded Dragon, who can be seen during educational presentations.

Join us for a day of learning, appreciation, and fun as we highlight the amazing dragons at the Little Rock Zoo. Learn about their unique characteristics, their role in nature, and how we can help protect them. Don’t miss the chance to see these incredible creatures up close!

Visit the Zoo on January 16, 2025, and experience the magic of real-life dragons!

Here's how you can help dragons and other reptiles in the wild:

  1. Recycle: Recycling your used materials helps to keep the planet clean by reducing trash and by lessening the need to extract resources like water, timber, and minerals for new products, which helps to lower greenhouse gas emissions. Little Rock Zoo hosts recycling drives 4 times a year (see website for details)!
  2. Responsible Pet Ownership: If you choose to have reptiles as pets, prioritize responsible ownership. Ensure that your pet reptile is acquired legally and support ethical breeders who prioritize the well-being of the animals. Visit TRAFFIC to learn more about the dangers of unsustainable pet trading.
  3. Support Conservation Organizations: Contribute to reputable conservation organizations dedicated to dragon conservation. Your support can fund research, habitat protection, and community programs essential for the survival of dragons. By visiting the Zoo, you’re already doing this! A portion of your admission and parking fee is dedicated to conservation groups that we are partnered with, like The Orianne Society.
  4. Raise Awareness: Tell your friends! Share what you know with others.
