Zoo Announces Birth of Baby Chimpanzee
Baby Born Overnight to First Time Mother
LITTLE ROCK (August 23, 2024) – A baby chimpanzee was born overnight at the Little Rock Zoo to first time mother, Kianga. Mom and baby are doing well, and Kianga is showing good maternal behaviors.
Kianga is 17 years old and has lived at the Little Rock Zoo since 2020. Kianga was transferred to the Little Rock Zoo on a breeding recommendation from the Albuquerque BioPark Zoo. Because Kianga is a first-time mother there is an increased risk for complications with the birth.
To allow mom and baby to adjust in these next few days, the public viewing area of the chimpanzee yard will be blocked-off for public access. We appreciate the public’s patience while we allow mom and baby some quiet time to bond.
