International Vulture Awareness Day 2024

Dates: 9/7/2024 - 9/7/2024
Price: Included with Admission

Come celebrate International Vulture Awareness Day on Saturday, September 7th at the Little Rock Zoo!  Learn why vultures are beneficial to humans and to the environment.

As we celebrate Vulture Awareness Day, let's take a moment to appreciate the invaluable role vultures play as nature's essential cleanup crew. Often misunderstood and underappreciated, vultures are crucial to maintaining the health of ecosystems by efficiently disposing of carrion and roadkill, preventing the spread of disease and contributing to a cleaner and safer environment for both wildlife and humans. Vultures face multiple man-made threats, including poisoning, power line collisions, and decreasing foraging ranges. Arkansas is home to two species of vultures – black vultures and turkey vultures.

Throughout the day, many activities will be featured that are included in your admission.

Schedule of Activities

10:00 AM - 12:00 PM Awareness table at front plaza, exploration station, and hands-on activities

11:00 AM Meet & greet with vulture

And don't miss this great opportunity to discover our latest exhibit - DRAGON KINGDOM!

Here's how we can contribute to vulture conservation:

  1. Anti-Poisoning Campaigns: Poisoning, intentional or unintentional, remains a severe threat to vultures. When vultures ingest game animals that have been shot by hunters using lead bullets or pellets, that lead that is use can kill them. To mitigate this problem, wildlife protection agencies have made regulations about the use of lead shot ammunition. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service addresses non-toxic shot regulations for hunting.
  2. Habitat Preservation: Support conservation initiatives that focus on preserving and restoring vulture habitats. Protecting these areas ensures a steady supply of food sources for vultures and helps maintain the delicate balance of the ecosystems they inhabit. The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission works directly with landowners to conserve and enhance our state’s wildlife and their habitats. Check out their Conservation Incentive Program to learn more.
  3. Support Conservation Organizations: Contribute to reputable conservation organizations dedicated to vulture conservation. Your support can fund research, community programs, and initiatives crucial for the survival of these essential birds. By visiting the Zoo, you’re already doing this! A portion of your admission and parking fee is dedicated to conservation partners the Zoo works with, like Vulpro.
  4. Raise Awareness: Use Vulture Awareness Day to raise awareness about the importance of vultures in maintaining ecological balance. Share information about the threats they face and the positive impact they have on the environment.
