Animal Enrichment

What is Animal Enrichment?

At the Little Rock Zoo, enrichment is the process of providing animals with choices and control in their environment while encouraging species-appropriate behaviors that exercise their bodies and stimulate their minds. Enrichment is essential to promoting both the physical and psychological well-being of the animals in our care.

Our enrichment program ensures that each species has opportunities to thrive, both physically and mentally. Psychological enrichment enables animals to use their natural cognitive abilities and respond to environmental conditions in ways that reflect their unique adaptations. Whether it’s through puzzle feeders, sensory experiences, or dynamic habitats, enrichment fosters behaviors that animals would naturally exhibit in the wild.

How You Can Help

You can make a special contribution to the well-being of our animals by purchasing an enrichment item through our Amazon wish list! These items are carefully selected to enhance the lives of our animal residents.

Important Note: Although enrichment often involves household items, all items go through careful preparation and approval before being given to the animals. For the safety of our animals, please never offer food or other items to them directly during your visit.
