Horticulture Volunteers

The Little Rock Zoo horticulture department is always looking for dedicated volunteers who have a strong commitment to the art of plant, flower, fruit, and vegetable care.  Garden clubs are invited to work with our horticulture departments on special projects around the Zoo and general individual volunteers are needed to care for many acres of grounds.

Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age. Available hours are Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Volunteers do not normally work on weekends. Many types of work are performed by volunteers, depending on the time of year and the abilities of the volunteer. In the spring, tasks include planting trees, shrubs and bedding plants. In the summer, volunteers water flowerbeds and planters. In the fall and winter, volunteers rake leaves and spread mulch. For information or to sign-up as a volunteer, contact Tom Frothingham at (501) 661-7227.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

Dave Rowland is one of our valued Zoo Landscape Volunteers and is a member of the Little Rock Zoo Grean Team.  As a dedicated volunteer, Dave logged more than 100 volunteer hours in 2009 alone.  Besides volunteering, Dave is a soldier-medic, operating room nurse, husband and father of four.  Three of Dave's children are currently serving our country in the military.  Dave always wears a smile and is friendly to everyone he meets.

Dave enjoys working in the dirt every chance he gets.  When asked what he enjoys most about volunteering at the Zoo, Dave said, "The Zoo has given me a chance to serve the Lord and bring back childhood memories.  As a kid, I grew up around animals at the San Francisco Zoo."

Dave is looking forward to getting to know everyone here at the Zoo as well as working with the Little Rock Zoo Green Team to keep "this garden" (the Zoo) a beautiful place.

If you would like to join Dave as a Landscape Volunteer, please contact our Lead Horticulturist, Tom Frothingham, at (501) 661-7227.
